This entry is part 13 of 17 in the series WK 2008

Here we go again. It’s just a few hours left, and I’ll be on my way back to Bern to do the (hopefully) last week of Military service this year. Looking back, its quite good to do 10 days in one piece and then have a few days off. Its even nicer when you know there’s not much left to do. We have 2 day-shifts left, and then we’ll have to get all our stuff (spare uniforms, vehicles, etc) back to where we got it from. Only downside to the last weekend was, that my Girlfriend was on a training. we saw us only on friday. Too bad.

I used the long weekend to fill up my Ipod with fresh music and I brought everything home which I wouldn’t need for the last week. That will make it a lot easier travelling home next weekend. :-)

I’ll let you know what’s happening as soon as I get there. Don’t expect too much, its still the same schedule like before, just shifted by 12 hours.

This entry is part 11 of 17 in the series WK 2008

I know i didn’t write a lot lately. The reason is that there’s simply nothing happening here. The schedule looks exactly the same every day.
Nothing spectacular at all.

Only highlight was the parcel i got from my girlfriend. And knowing that there might be one from my mum on the way.

Time will tell…

This entry is part 10 of 17 in the series WK 2008

The daily schedule is more or less settled in now. Our biological clocks are adjusted to the time shift. Our day looks something like this:

  • 17:00 wake up
  • 17:30 move to Bern
  • 18:00 breakfast
  • 19:00 take over command post
  • 19:15 briefing
  • 19:30 bring out first team
  • 22:00 lunch
  • 22:30 bring out second team
  • 01:30 bring out third team
  • 04:00 dinner
  • 04:30 bring out fourth team
  • 08:30 debriefing
  • 08:45 move to encampment
  • 09:30 go to bed

That’s my boring day

This entry is part 8 of 17 in the series WK 2008

I just found out that i wasnt the only one that overslept yesterday. 3 other guys slept until about 1pm :-) . Luckily the standby-driver brought them home

Sleeping is a good thing, especially when you’ve done your last tour and got about 3.5 hours until you go back to the encampment. Bad thing is when no-one wakes you up. But as i had the car-keys they wouldn’t have left without me :-) . I was only a few minutes late, but i was sure to hear this one again and again.

As we arrived, we saw that everyone was waiting outside. The key for the encampment was nowhere to be found. Soon it was clear that the key was with someone that was on holiday. Yippee

Working during the night has certain advantages. You get through the city with no trouble and you are left in peace. Downsides are that the radio program repeats every 2 to 3 hours and that you get bored between the tours. Still the worst thing is the jet lag. OK, I’ve got a fairly easy job compared to the others. No freezing outside.

My girlfriend sent a parcel today. I also sent the address to my mum. Hope there will be a highlight when my name appears on the list in the post-office.

5 more nights to go

This entry is part 5 of 17 in the series WK 2008

It seems that blogging via my mobile phone worked quite good. Only downside is, that the number of characters is capped. I don’t know exactly, but I think it’s a problem of my mobile phone and not Wordpress. So don’t wonder if my posts are kept short. At least the smileys work…

We are now at our final destination and already working. We had to move our day-schedule by 12 hours. So we’re doing night-shifts for the next 7 days. Food is still quite good, encampment a charm.

In about 20 minutes I will go on my next tour to bring the people out to the guarding posts. Hope I find the way :-) .

As we are working night-shifts at the moment, most of my posts will come during the night or early morning. Will keep you updated.

This entry is part 4 of 17 in the series WK 2008

Yesterday was a ‘busy’ day. My main job was delivering food and shuttling people around. OK, I had to get up 1 hour earlier than the others to get breakfast (which took approx. 1/2 hour per way), but it also got me around the training :-) .

This morning we packed our stuff and moved to our final location for the next two weeks. The encampment is mainly one thing: NICE. We have real beds, nice showers and are close to a larger village. We even have windows. Fresh air! Think we won it this time :-)
